После периода бурного экономического роста на рубеже XIX-XX веков в Саратове сформировалась уникальная архитектурная и культурная среда. Стремительное развитие города, связанное с появлением крупных промышленников вроде братьев Шмидтов и Василия Кокуева, чьи капиталы активно вкладывались в строительство, создало плодотворную почву для творческих поисков зодчих.
На архитектурный ландшафт Саратова оказали влияние как столичные тенденции, так и местные традиции. Еще в середине XIX века в городе появлялись постройки, созданные по проектам выдающегося столичного архитектора Константина Андреевича Тона, автора Храма Христа Спасителя в Москве, чей русско-византийский стиль задавал тон в государственном строительстве империи.
Именно в эту эпоху культурного расцвета в Саратове открылись первые общественные музеи, была основана третья в России Консерватория (1912 год), а в 1876 году принял первых зрителей цирк братьев Никитиных, для которого было построено специальное здание.
